    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Accountant - Sergeant, A Battery, Royal Artillary.

    Notes:

In his book (see Documents), Charles Newton Weston (his grandson) says due to financial difficulties John could not go to public school, but was sent to Canada at an early age where the family had some landed interests. When he came home he decided there were no prospects for him in England and enlisted in a regiment to proceed to India. His father begged him to reconsider and offered to buy him out but he refused to consider any change of plans.
Although Newton (as he was known in the family) got several facts wrong, this sounds like a likely scenario. It would explain why I can't find him in the 1841 census, and his disenchantment with England might be tied in with his father's impending marriage to a much younger woman. The landed interests in Canada are interesting - Edward, John's elder brother, ended up in America.

In India he was attached to the Royal Horse artillery and served in the Madras Presidency.

Sources for his passage to India are

These were found on the FIBIS site. He is given as 22 years old in 1848 which doesn't quite match up. He is described as a farmer from Northampton, recruited as a gunner in London.

He retired from the army as a Sergeant Major in 1860, and took up service in the Nizam's Public Works Department - as an accountant - until he died in 1878.

Newton also says 'My grandfather arrived in India 1856 just before the Mutiny in 1857. Married shortly after he arrived to an anglo indian girl Mary Anne Maine - an old anglo indian family from the Central Provinces.'
He got the date of arrival in India wrong, but the information on Mary is likely correct.
Also the family was in Kamptee when Newton's father was born in 1862. 'Later the regiment was stationed at Jalna and then at Secunderabad where the family stayed. When his period of service in the army was completed his Commanding Officer strongly recommended him for a commision in HEH the Nizam's forces, and he stayed there the remains of his active life.'

NB He could havs enlited for 12 years in 1847. See this site

This is for the Brotish Army, rather than the East India Company Army, but no doubt, to get recruits, they would have introduced the same short term enlistments.

John married Mary Anne Maine on 20 Oct 1853 in Jaulnah, India. Mary (daughter of Samuel Maine and Rosannah da Silva) was born on 25 Mar 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India; was christened on 1 Jul 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary Anne Maine was born on 25 Mar 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India; was christened on 1 Jul 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India (daughter of Samuel Maine and Rosannah da Silva).

    Notes:

In Charles Newton Weston's book (see Documents) he says that the Maines were an old Anglo Indian family from the Central Provinces.

    Notes:

His grandson Charles Newton Weston says that his father, John Augustus, had three older brothers (who all regularly took liquor) so there would have to be at least two other children here. Robert Shorter Weston seems like an extremely good fit for various reasons noted on his page.
However, Karen Brown, Emily Maude's great granddaughter, was told by her mother that there were only four children. The oldest Emily Maude, then John Augustus, then two daughters Lydia and Alice.
So there is quite a bit of mismatch here, and all the sources seem good.

    Children:
    1. 2. Robert Shorter Weston was born on 17 Nov 1855 in Jaulnah, India; was christened on 06 Aug 1856 in Jaulnah, India.
    2. John Augustus Weston was born on 11 Aug 1862 in Kamptee, Hyderabad, India; was christened on 1 Oct 1862 in Christ Church, Kamptee, Hyderabad, India; died in 1931.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Robert Weston was born in 1786 in Aynho, Northamptonshire, England; was christened on 25 Jul 1787 in St Michael's Church, Aynho, Northamptonshire, England (son of John Weston and Catherine Burford); died on 20 Jan 1872 in Brackley St Peter, Northampton, England.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Solicitor

    Notes:

He was Coroner of the county of Northampton for 55 years, and High Steward of the Manor & Borough of Brackley until he retired in 1858.
He was elected a Burgess in 1858 and in the following year Alderman and subsequently Mayor of Brackley.

Charles Newton Weston (Robert's great grandson) wrote in his book (relevant chapter in Documents) that he visited Brackley in 1936. He saw a gravestone 'Sacred to the memory of Mary, the beloved wife of Robert Weston of this town, Solicitor, who died on 6th day of January 1876 and of Robert Weston who died on 14th December 1889 aged 64 years.'
This could not have been the grave of his great grandmother since she died in 1844. Robert's second wife Maria died in 1889. And Robert himself died in 1872. So this gravestone is problematical - could there have been two solicitors in Brackley called Robert Weston?

Robert married Mary Rebecca Shorter on 8 Jun 1814 in St Peters Church, Brackley, Northampton, England. Mary (daughter of John Shorter and Mary Burford) was born in 1790 in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, England; was christened on 24 Apr 1790 in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, England; died on 23 Jul 1844 in Brackley, Northampton, England; was buried on 27 Jul 1844 in Brackley, Northampton, England.
