  1. 2.  Edwin Ash WestonEdwin Ash Weston was born on 23 Nov 1887 in Kammamett, India; was christened on 9 Dec 1887 in St Thomas Mount, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, India (son of John Augustus Weston and Sarah Louisa Ash); died on 23 Oct 1958 in 49 Rothbury Terrace Newcastle-on-Tyne, England; was buried in All Saints Cemetery, Jesmond Rd, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England.

    Notes:

Norman Chamarette says that Edwin was the Chief Permanent Way Inspector of the State Railways in Hyderabad. They lived at a Railway House in Darmabad. Later (I'm not sure where this information came from) Edwin's Aunt Emily got him the job in Jamshedpur, as Superintendent of the Railways for Tata Steel.

    Place name Kammamett
    (1) In http://dsal.uchicago.edu/maps/gazetteer/index.html there's an old map showing Khammamet (I think) west of Secunderabad in the province (?) of Warangal.
    (2) In http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~poyntz/India/maps.html#area Constables 1893 area maps there's an index of place names which gives a district and town of Kamamet (in Haid.)
In current day India I can find two possibilities -
    (3) Kamarhati, but that is a suburb of Calcutta in West Bengal, which seems unlikely;
    (4) Kamareddi, which is maybe 70 miles North of Secunderabad.

He left India in 1947 shortly after India was granted independence, though the older children had gone to England before the war. According to Florence they went to Newcastle because Winifred's husband Edward Davis came from there, and they had no other ties in England.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Household Surgeon, Afzul Gunj Hospital.; In Medical charge of HH the Nizam's 4th Infantry.

    Notes:

On the web site for Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, there is a bit of history. When it was Hyderabad Medical School, teaching in Urdu, in 1888 a Chloroform Commission was set up (with the Nizam's blessing) to study the effect of Chloroform on dogs. They did pioneer work, and one of the commission members was Mr A Chamarette. The leader of the commission was Dr Laurie. The Medical School was set up in 1846 by the Nizam, deliberately using Urdu to encourage native doctors, from the sound of it.
Since Arthur was Assistant Surgeon HH Nizam's service in 1887 when he married, this is almost certain to be him. He would have been 27 years old, so quite junior.
Arthur Mitchell (other researcher) confirms this.

I haven't been able to find his baptism - the date of birth is that given on the St Georges Church web site, and confirmed by his marriage certificate - he was 27 in 1887. Chadarghat is now Chadherghat (according to St Georges Church) and is in the cityof Hyderabad.

Norman Chamarette says he had a wonderful military funeral at Hyderabad.

Arthur married Catherine Emma Combes on 21 Dec 1887 in St George's Church, Chaderghat, Hyderabad, India. Catherine (daughter of John Gilbert Combes and Ruth Eliza Willamina Henrietta Bowen) was born on 12 Oct 1866 in Chaderghat, Hyderabad, India; was christened on 27 Dec 1866 in Chaderghat, Hyderabad, India; died on 29 Jun 1892 in Chaderghat, Hyderabad, India; was buried on 30 Jun 1892 in Chaderghat, Hyderabad, India. Other Events:

    • Occupation: Accountant - Sergeant, A Battery, Royal Artillary.

    Notes:

In his book (see Documents), Charles Newton Weston (his grandson) says due to financial difficulties John could not go to public school, but was sent to Canada at an early age where the family had some landed interests. When he came home he decided there were no prospects for him in England and enlisted in a regiment to proceed to India. His father begged him to reconsider and offered to buy him out but he refused to consider any change of plans.
Although Newton (as he was known in the family) got several facts wrong, this sounds like a likely scenario. It would explain why I can't find him in the 1841 census, and his disenchantment with England might be tied in with his father's impending marriage to a much younger woman. The landed interests in Canada are interesting - Edward, John's elder brother, ended up in America.

In India he was attached to the Royal Horse artillery and served in the Madras Presidency.

Sources for his passage to India are

Source Name Embarkation Lists, EIC Army Recruits

These were found on the FIBIS site. He is given as 22 years old in 1848 which doesn't quite match up. He is described as a farmer from Northampton, recruited as a gunner in London.

He retired from the army as a Sergeant Major in 1860, and took up service in the Nizam's Public Works Department - as an accountant - until he died in 1878.

Newton also says 'My grandfather arrived in India 1856 just before the Mutiny in 1857. Married shortly after he arrived to an anglo indian girl Mary Anne Maine - an old anglo indian family from the Central Provinces.'
He got the date of arrival in India wrong, but the information on Mary is likely correct.
Also the family was in Kamptee when Newton's father was born in 1862. 'Later the regiment was stationed at Jalna and then at Secunderabad where the family stayed. When his period of service in the army was completed his Commanding Officer strongly recommended him for a commision in HEH the Nizam's forces, and he stayed there the remains of his active life.'

NB He could havs enlited for 12 years in 1847. See this site
    http://wapedia.mobi/en/British_Army_during_the_Victorian_Era
This is for the Brotish Army, rather than the East India Company Army, but no doubt, to get recruits, they would have introduced the same short term enlistments.

John married Mary Anne Maine on 20 Oct 1853 in Jaulnah, India. Mary (daughter of Samuel Maine and Rosannah da Silva) was born on 25 Mar 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India; was christened on 1 Jul 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Mary Anne Maine was born on 25 Mar 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India; was christened on 1 Jul 1833 in Trichinopoly, Madras, India (daughter of Samuel Maine and Rosannah da Silva).

    Notes:

In Charles Newton Weston's book (see Documents) he says that the Maines were an old Anglo Indian family from the Central Provinces.

    Notes:

His grandson Charles Newton Weston says that his father, John Augustus, had three older brothers (who all regularly took liquor) so there would have to be at least two other children here. Robert Shorter Weston seems like an extremely good fit for various reasons noted on his page.
However, Karen Brown, Emily Maude's great granddaughter, was told by her mother that there were only four children. The oldest Emily Maude, then John Augustus, then two daughters Lydia and Alice.
So there is quite a bit of mismatch here, and all the sources seem good.
