Garnet was christened Mervyn Garnet. Cousin Soozie says the story is that Garnet was a sickly child and by changing the name this was supposed to help improve health. I know that a few people in my Mum's generation, including her, were named one thing and called another. I saw that it is a Jewish thing to change names to ward off the Angel of Death. - [S7] BMD - British Library.
