Notes - Update to this - there is a previous Chamarette! See below in Sources - List Of Inscriptions On Tombs Or Monuments. J.D. is likely to have been his father, and was Roman Catholic which would tie up with the rumoured French origin. He was born about 1758, so 35 years old when Andrew was born.
Andrew was previously the earliest Chamarette found. No Chamarette (or Chamarett or Chamaret) has been found in England prior to that - or in fact at all until they started to return from India in the Twentieth Century. The Chamaret surname does exist in France.

Sources - [S11] Personal Knowledge, Katherine Oates.
Her son Stephen (who is presumably the Stephen Chamarette mentioned elsewhere as a source) visited Chamaret in the south of France. He was told that there were three brothers - one went to Normandy, one to Canada, and one to Great Britain. She had read of a Huguenot community in Edinburgh and from his name (Andrew) presumed his forbears went there. This is rather a wild guess. - [S11] Personal Knowledge, Stephen Chamarette.
Family myth that the family were lace makers of Huguenot descent who left Chamaret in France during the persecution . - [S9] Other Researchers - Arthur Mitchell.
As recorded in the proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of London Topographical survey of India 1817 to 1845. And in the five volumes of R. H. Phillimore, 'Historical Records of the Survey of India' Andrew and his son Andrew were both on the teamthat surveyed India. Andrew Senior was associated with Sir George Everest and Colonel Andrew Waugh. Andrew Senior was appointed to Madras 19 March 1805. Served on the Madras survey 1807 to 1820 and on the Hyderabad survey from 1820 till his death in 1848.
Arthur Mitchell says he was F.R.G.S - presumably Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
