Father William Arthur Milton Thompson Mother Julia Anne Crampton, b. 10 Aug 1817, Madras, India Married 27 Jun 1838 Vepery, Madras, India Notes - Lancaster says that W A Thompson was half brother to Sir Richmond Campbell Shakespear (cf). It is difficult to see how this could be, since Sir Richmond's mother Emily started producing children by John Talbot Shakespear in 1806, and died in 1824, a year before her husband. However, Sir Richmond married a Thompson, so possibly W A was his brother-in-law, and family legend had twisted it slightly before it got to Lancaster.
- Lancaster (Milton Poyntz) also says that W A Thompson's uncle was Major Poyntz, so this would be the origin of that as a middle name. Norman Poyntz Palmer Chamarette has also mentioned a connection to a Major Poyntz. Note also that it makes it likely that W A Thompson's wife was a Poyntz - Major Poyntz being her brother.
- This information is from Lancaster Chamarette's 'Brief History'. He also said that William Thompson and his half brother Sir Richmond Shakespear were at school and university together. Also Chris Van de Byl's family tree says Winefred Amelia's father was half brother to William Shakespeare! Also Arthur Mitchell says that the mother of Winifred Amelia 'Was a widow - first marriage to Sir Richard Shakespear'.
However, since Sir Richmond's mother Emily was married to John Shakespear from at least 1806 until she died, and the schools given for each of them are different, that doesn't seem to work.

Died age 50yrs 3months 19 days of Diabetes with carbuncles. Place is spelt Chudderghat - [S50] Bombay Almanac, 1857, from FIBIS website.
1856 - At Lingasoor, Mr. J.E. Chamarette, to Miss W.U. Thompson, second daughter of Quarter Master W. Thompson, Artillery, Hyderabad Contingent.
I can't find this marriage at the British Library. Lingsoogour is now Lingasagur, Raichur Doab, and is a fair distance west of Hyderabad. It would still have been in Hyderabad Deccan, so should be in N2. However I have searched marriages in all three districts from 1839 to 1860 and cannot find it. Can only assume the record was lost.
Addendum:- the marriage certificate shows why I could not find the marriage. There was no clergyman available so they were married by the Deputy Commissioner of Lingsoogour - [S25] St Georges Church, Hyderabad Website, Kerry Edwards, Gives the date and place.
