AEW & Kathleen Daisley. Tregantle Fort sports field
That Minnie only found out about Kathleen through a misdirected letter when AEW was involved with Tregantle Fort:-
This, whilst a good story does seem extraordinary.
By this stage i.e Tregantle Fort comes into the story in 1920 according to MoD archive information - a good few years had passed since the relationship with Kathleen had started, his army career had continued - including action for and award of the MC in June of 1916, and I find it very difficult to reconcile that it was possible to keep the two parts of his life separated given the general control and required commitments of service life.
Also that the army granted him the rank of Major on his retirement - and probably the corresponding boost to his pension as appropriate - indicates that more likely he was ´retired´ from the service as the army contracted in personnel at the cessation of WW1 and re-adjusted for peace time.
AEW of course by this time was a senior soldier at 43 ( retired from service 14.11.1923) and it may well have been normal practice for such an approach to be taken.
Place | Taken I think on the sports field at Tregantle Fort probably in the early ´20´s |
